Hiring the hall

Because of its flexibility the Community Hall is a perfect venue for many different events and activities.

We are very conveniently located a short walk from the ferry, buses and large public car park, so no matter how far your guests have traveled, they are very welcome at the Community Hall.

Currently we offer for hire: the sunny rear hall known as The River Room; plus the Middle Hall which is located between the main Kitchen serving hatch and Bar. You can also hire the entire building including the Front Hall allowing access through the double doors on St James street. The Hall has a range of facilities, furniture and layouts to suit many types of function: celebrations, performances, sales, exhibitions, classes and meetings. 

We can accommodate up to 200 people for informal (standing) occasions, or 100 seated comfortably. On-site catering is easy from our kitchen or external courtyard. In 2016 we installed a fully fitted modern kitchen with brand new appliances including a catering standard dishwasher and 2 serving hatches. Even if you are not cooking, you may still like to use our crockery and cutlery.

Our licensed bar can also be booked for your event. The bar (which is separate from the River Room) is open to the public a couple of evenings mid-week and your guests are very welcome to join us. Alternatively, exclusive bar arrangements can be made - just let us know when you book.

Ask us about our electric piano keyboard, projection screen and PA system, for training courses we have broadband with WiFi. The premises are licensed for music and dancing. In 2017 we updated our loos which makes the hall fully accessible for wheelchair users.

How much does it cost to hire the Community Hall?

Prices depend on the type of activity and which facilities you require (2017 prices held until December 2018).

River Room £12 per hour 
incl. use of Kitchen for drinks and light refreshments (no cooking)
Kitchen - preparing and cooking £10 per hour
Courtyard for Professional Catering £25
Exclusive Staffed Bar £10 per hour
Entire Hall £18 per hour
incl. River Room, Middle Area, Foyer, Front Hall and use of Kitchen for light refreshments

For example, to hire the Hall for a morning with light refreshments, could cost from just £36.00
An evening event with exclusive bar and kitchen for full catering could cost from £128.00
Note: we charge for the total access period; which includes the time you need to set up before your event, as well as the cleaning and tidying of the Hall afterwards.

We do ask for full payment in advance and a signed booking form to ensure the Conditions of Hiring are understood.
A returnable deposit is usually requested to cover and breakages or additional cleaning required.
Additional charges will apply for corkage if hirers wish to provide their own alcohol.

The Trustees are glad to offer discounts for charities, local not-for-profit organisations and CHOYD members.  More information on request.

How do I make a booking?

Please remember, the Community Hall is a charity and all hire fees contribute towards our running costs and ongoing improvements.

We do have some rules for hirers which include:

  • Safety: familiarisation with fire exits, use of safe electrical appliances, responsibility for the safety of children and vulnerable adults; no naked flames, no smoking including e-cigarettes; liability for personal injury and property.
  • Courtesy: consideration regarding noise levels; cleaning and tidying up; taking care with the furniture, decoration, fixtures and fittings; keeping dogs on leads and using the rear courtyard for access (if pre-arranged).
  • Cancellation and Damages: Loss or damage, including loss of hiring due to late cancellation may incur a (replacement) charge and the repayment of your deposit will be at the discretion of the Trustees.
